Music in the Shape of a Cube

Music in the Shape of a Cube is a contextual remix wherein environmental factors are used to create a site-specific participatory rendition of Philip Glass’s similarly named piece Music in the Shape of a Square. It uses a Kinect sensor to track the movements of the audience/performers and processes the data to apply effects and filters to the original piece, creating a live, real-time remix. This piece aims to reveal the Modernist notion of originality as an impossible ideal by highlighting the role of context in the listening experience.

Commissioned by Basic FM at the Tyneside Cinema, Newcastle, broadcast in March 2013.
